Boy Scouts

One of the many facets of the scouting program at St. Tarcissus is Boy Scout Troop # 969, which is sponsored by the St. Tarcissus Holy Name Society.

This organization is for boys who have completed the fifth grade, or are at least eleven years old, but not older than eighteen. This is one of the most active troops on Chicago's northwest side. The troop usually meets weekly. Not only are scouts exposed to scounting basics such as camping, first aid, physical fitness and leadership, but the troop also tries to bring a "hands-on" experience to its meetings by trying and doing different things. This is all tied to scouting's advancement program, in which merit badge's provide the scouts with a taste of life's many subjects and occupations, such as journalism, electronics and computers. This brings a challenge to try new activities which could result in a fresh interest or hobby, and possibly start someone on the path to a career.

Outings and camp-outs are also a big part of the scouting program at St. Tarcissus. Weekend camp-outs are held several times a year and have brought members of the troop to places such as Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin and occasionally historic Galena, Illinois. Not to leave mom, sisters and younger brothers out, activities are also held in which the entire family can take part.

The summer months offer the troop's biggest trips of the calendar year. Each July the troop heads to Michigan for its annual one or two week stay in Owasippe Scout Reservation near Muskegon. Fishing, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, sailing and biking are just a few of the activities offered at the Boy Scout Summer camp.

High adventure is also a part of Troop # 969, as it has also conducted several backpacking expeditions to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.

This is only a brief overview of what the Boy Scout Program at St. Tarcissus has to offer. Come on down to our next meeting and find out what we're all about!
